Professional Skills
During my placement, I demonstrated reliability and punctuality by arriving early each day and being prepared to begin my tasks. I maintained open and respectful communication with my mentor educator and team, checking in regularly and asking for clarification when needed.
A moment where I applied problem-solving was when a conflict arose between two toddlers over a toy. I calmly supported them in using words to express their feelings and helped them negotiate turn-taking, drawing on strategies from ECED 1330: Child Guidance.
Throughout the practicum, I made consistent contributions to the team, such as helping with daily routines, cleaning up shared areas, and offering to prep materials for activities. I showed initiative by suggesting a music-based transition activity that I learned about in class, which the team later adopted.
I actively engaged in reflective practice through daily journaling and mentor debriefs. After receiving constructive feedback about giving children more time to respond during conversations, I adjusted my interactions to be more patient and responsive, aligning with the values discussed in ECED 1340: Interpersonal Communication.
Practical Skills
I practiced responsive and relational care by acknowledging each child’s cues and supporting their needs in a warm, respectful manner. For example, during diapering and mealtime, I maintained eye contact, used gentle tones, and explained each step of the process, which reflects respectful caregiving from ECED 1200: Professional Foundations.
I performed various roles and duties, such as supervising outdoor play, setting up provocations, documenting children’s learning, and supporting transitions throughout the day. I became more confident in managing routines and responding to children’s individual needs, especially during moments of emotional dysregulation.
I also practiced observation techniques from ECED 1350, using objective language and making connections to developmental domains from CYCA 2500: Human Development. This helped me understand how to document learning meaningfully and plan appropriate responses to children’s interests.
